What does machine display on startup? Any error message?
Windows Installation CD doesn't work after Linux installation in a few machines and one has to remove GRUB first. Boot up from SuperGRUB CD and select Fix Windows Boot Loader option. Windows Installation CD will work after that.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Is the drive SATA? there can be problems with either BIOS setup or needing the driver for XP.

    Try
    Code:
    lspci -v
    and check interface type and
    Code:
    sudo hdparm -i /dev/sda
    should give hard drive information.
