"GNOME" session removed from GDM
Hello there,
Been using linux for a while now, and yesterday encounered a problem I've never had before. Now, my laptop has gentoo installed along with GNOME 2.20? nVidia GeForce 440 Go. Installed gentoo on it about 6 months ago, then been using it occasionally, mostly for interent and uni.
Now, yesterday I booted it, did --sync, started to emerge new version of wine, but then cancelled it half-way throught. Surfed internet for a bit, changed my wallpaper, shutdown.
Today, I turn it on, it boots, but when it starts XDM the screen turns black and everything hangs. Tried it 4 times. Once it has gone as far as loading my wallpaper!
So I updated xorg-server to 1.3.0.0-r6 (from -r5), gdm, and nVidia drivers ( from 96.43.05 to 96.43.07 ). Now it runs properly, but I only get option to run x-window manager, or GNOME fail-safe session! No "GNOME" option anymore in GDM, like on my desktop computer. If I use the fails safe mode it works fine, and has all my previous settings.
Why all of a sudden this happens? Anyone had a similar thing? One thing to note is that my laptop is on its 5 year (maybe its dying
