    Mysql error when starting

    Well i have had a server for about 2 months now, and im still finding out new stuff about it, so i started coding a lil php & JS, and i wanted to make a DB for it with mysql, anyway this is not the point :P. The point is that i get an error when i try starting my mysql services.

    When i do
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/mysql start
    this is the output i get
    Code:
     * Starting mysql ...
     * Starting mysql (/etc/mysql/my.cnf)
     * MySQL NOT started (0)                                                  [ !! ]
    thanks for help, if you need anymore information from any files, just let me know, and ill post em asap ^_^

    Code:
    emerge --config mysql
    Should fix your problem. You must configure your mysql server before you can start it.

    It is explained more here:

    Ok then, let us see your
    Code:
    emerge --info
    and
    Code:
    emerge -pv mysql
    Also, I just noticed, since I don't actually run Gentoo (I use Funtoo), is this normal?
    This ebuild is from an overlay named 'gentoo': '/var/db/pkg/'

    Funtoo is a fork of Gentoo by the original Gentoo creator, Daniel Robbins. It is more of a bleeding edge distro.

    Now, since you are running Gentoo stable, and don't have crazy cflags, have you ran an etc-update since your last update? Have you ran revdep-rebuild since having the mysql problems? Have you ran an emerge --sync && emerge -avuDN world since installing mysql?

    If you have done all of that, have you tried reinstalling mysql?

    I have had the problem of mysql not starting before, but I don't exactly recall what it was that was causing it. I want to say use flags, but I really don't remember.

    Well the thing is that mysql is like the third emerge i did after i got my server xD, and yes i tried re installing, i did the unmerge, unemerge, or wtf xD, but it worked, but how can i be sure EVERYTHING got removed? so there wasn't any files left?

    And Funtoo sounds nice, so much different Linux sources :P

    You need to install some portage utilities.

    Code:
    emerge gentoolkit
    then, to make sure all of your linking is correct, run this:
    Code:
    revdep-rebuild -i
    That will check all of your library dynamic linking and fix it should it find a problem.

    Ok, since I am not in linux right now, would you check /var/log and any subfolders to see if there is a mysql log, and if it has any errors in it?

    If we can find why it isn't starting, I am sure we can fix it.
