Check www.linuxprinting.org to see if your printer is in the list.
Here I can print on Brother HL-5040, HP LaserJet5, and generally on all of our HP printers in the company. (All My boxes are on Linux)

I checked out for you, should work like a charm.
So:
- Check your cable connection
- Check in yout setup if the paralell port is active and enabled !!

You also have to kinda install the printer and configure cups.
