I tried installing gentoo once and got all kinds of error messages, but I assume that's because I suck. The real reason I'm asking is that the hardware on a D800 is relatively new and that gentoo might not find it when I install. Since I'm relatively new to Linux I don't have the know how of getting around hardware issues.

... be more explicit , what kind of error you get ?
It is not gentoo, build a correct kernel and hotplug should do the job .gentoo might not find it
Gentoo is an optimized distrib, you can do what ever you want, just have to know where you go
