MD5 sum is a mathematical equation used to determine whether a file you downloaded (usually an ISO) is viable or whether the download got corrupted. You usually don't have to generate the MD5 sums yourself, just check them using the md5sum program.Registered Linux user #270181

I just checked a gentoo-install ISO. I checked OK, but I've (as far as I know) never encounter a corrupt file...

That's a good thing. It doesn't happen often, but it can be a serious pain if you've spent hours downloading an ISO, then burn it and realize the download was bad. IMHO it's good practice to md5sum check before you burn. Originally Posted by maol9883
