no sound, no video anymore pls help!!
Hi!
I don't know what i did. I can't play music or watch videos anymore. I've a problem with mcop (i got an error, saying something with arts and it can't use mcop)... and i changed the owners from root to a normal user and no error came later.
But i can play anythung with xmms or mplayer. I don't get an error, simply doesnt come any sound or the video files are like frozen.
So, i know its something with arts, so i run artsd status:
unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/mcop-oswaldo/zi011_glhnet_mhm_de-204b-419cc8b0)
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:521
snd_pcm_hw_prepare) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_PREPARE failed: Invalid argument
artsd: pcm.c:662: snd_pcm_close: Assertion `pcm' failed.
Aborted
Pls Help!

this is the step:
1.download new xmms player , newer the better.but dont juust download read the supports infomation
2. install it and reboot .
3. try playing your musics
'' if this dont work continue with the following but i recommend to continue with the following procedure
4.download sound kernel patch
5.install and reboot
6.check your sound configuration
''ok that all help i can give ..answered using experience... to i dont really know if this work with your system... but yet you can try... nothing to loose

thx!
Problem solved! What you said really pointed me in direction. I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.9 and added few sound modules and voila!

In order for you to truly be able to completely migrate to Linux, you must stop thinking the way M$ has conditioned you to. The *only* time you need to reboot your computer is when you change the kernel itself. Other than that, all you generally have to do is restart the application that you've modified. Sometimes you don't even have to do that, as Linux programmers have figured out...are you ready? you're gonna like this... DYNAMIC CONFIG RELOADING. Yes. Quite a few programs can now re-read their config files and know when they've been modified while running and will accept the new settings.
Anyways, the point of this: You don't have to reboot when you modify settings or libraries on your computer.
Also, sound file formats are not handled by the kernel, but rather by codecs installed via plugins for XMMS and various other multimedia programs. If you are going to answer a question, at least know wtf you're talking about.Their code will be beautiful, even if their desks are buried in 3 feet of crap. - esr
