    Try loging in as root and changing it;
    or typing
    Code:
    su
    in the commad line; and then trying to open it;
    or typing
    Code:
    su
    vi
    which will enter a command line editor;

    As much as I didn't want to, I just formatted the hdd. I screwed up quite a few configs, that I want to fix, and since I am here, I may as well fix them.

    Once I finish re-installing it, do all the Slackware commands apply to Gentoo? Like if I wanted to start x, would I just do startx? Or do I have to go through xdm or gdm, or the like?

    the commands are the same except of course a few distro specific ones like:

    rc-update for adding scripts to runlevels etc
    emerge for installing software
    and some others which i can't recall right now!
