    Redirect the screen output to a text file so you can use less/nano etc to view it and copy it ... emerge -pvuDN world > emerge_output_text
    Thanks Jonathan, I like that redirect tip, I put that in my notes.

    There are a few other tips to keep in mind when working with portage.
    If you have a list of packages and it keeps failing on the first package, use this one
    Code:
    emerge -avu --skip-first
    If you want portage to keep going until it just cannot continue, use this.
    Code:
    emerge -avu --keep-going

    I am confused, I see and saw Mike Tbob as last to post, but I do not see his or your post Mike. I see Jonathan as previous or last post.

    Solved..sorry i did not see that there was a page 1 and 2. I was only looking at page one of the posts.

    I did a re emerge of net-fs/samba. I don't understand part of the (build), <--not sure if that is the correct term. I think it could be related to my problem. I need help in interpreting the following.

    Code:
     * QA Notice: Missing soname symlink(s):
     *
     * 	usr/lib/libdmallocthcxx.so.5 -> libdmallocthcxx.so.5.5.2
     * 	usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5 -> libdmalloc.so.5.5.2
     * 	usr/lib/libdmalloccxx.so.5 -> libdmalloccxx.so.5.5.2
     * 	usr/lib/libdmallocth.so.5 -> libdmallocth.so.5.5.2
     *

    >>> Installing (1 of 1) dev-libs/dmalloc-5.5.2-r3
     * checking 23 files for package collisions
    >>> Merging dev-libs/dmalloc-5.5.2-r3 to /
    --- /usr/
    --- /usr/lib/
    What is a QA notice? A soname? I will also do more web searches on this But more especially what does, or what are the implications of. this:

    usr/lib/libdmalloc.so.5 -> libdmalloc.so.5.5.2i am wondering if I need an earlier version of libdmalloc.

    No idea and Google doesn't help much.
    Did you get things to compile?

    Thanks Jonathan, that was a great link on "soname". Meanwhile here is a partial copy and paste of revdep-rebuild.
