I very much appreciate Mike's attempts to cure my problem

While trying to cure the problem myself I read that .......

I can say that Network Manager has a really nasty
bug with regards to USB modem connections. When the connection drops, it is impossible
to restart the connection without rebooting the computer.

    end quote

Alas I can find no cure

Which means that for the moment installing Gentoo is not possible.

At least not until I become aware of a cure is available.

Please let me know how you go installing Gentoo using the rescue disc.

And if it works the address of the rescue disc.

Meggin I have very little confidence in my advice, so I hope you wait for Mike. But with my little knowledge, I hope I can be of some help. Does your internet service provider allow you both mobile service and a home modem. With a DSL modem that could plug into your network port on your computer, you could use that to install, and download any necessary additional files. Chances are that, your live DVD has net-setup, or may similar or more options than system rescue disk. You may not need to download the System Rescue disk. Sorry I forgot to look up the download site, and its free.

Sorry guys, I gave been sick the past few days. The point of the link that I sent you was that you probably need to rebuild your kernel to include the "Testing" drivers, which I believe is what you need.
    Code:
    [*] USB support  --->
<M> USB Serial Converter support --->
<M> USB driver for GSM and CDMA modems
Wil be the option you need to enable.

Now it is my turn to apologise. Thinking I would be advised when I reply was posted I did not check this thread.

I've also requested a cc of a similar bug from bugzilla and been waiting a response.

    thanks for the help
