    Setup wi-fi


    Hi, all. I can't configure the wi-fi. Use encryption WPA2, hidden access point. I did everything by the Handbook.

    File /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf was received so: wpa_passphrase My network Passwd > /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf.

    start-stop-daemon: failed to start '/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant'
    EEROR: net.wlan0 failed to start


    What's the problem? Please help. Sorry for my english.

    One thing I usually have to do is comment out the encrypted passphrase in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and use my real key. For some reason my router doesn't like the encrypted key.

    One more thing, is you need to go ahead and put this in /etc/conf.d/net just to make sure:

    wpa_supplicant_wlan0="-Dmadwifi -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"
    I just set this up on my system this past week, so it is still fresh on my mind and I have been using wireless in gentoo for a while. If these changes don't work, we can go from there.

    This is my wpa_supplicant.conf without my psk because it is my real one:

    One question, are you using the in kernel drivers?

    If so, you may have to use -Dwext instead of -Dmadwifi. Not sure, but worth a try. The in kernel drivers for all the cards should use the wext driver.

    So, this should be your /etc/conf.d/net to try out:

    wpa_supplicant_wlan0="-Dwext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf"
    And try this in your wpa_supplicant.conf

    If you don't want to run dhcpcd manually and not add it to the default runlevel, then just type:

    /etc/init.d/dhcpcd start
    But if you are going to use it as dhcp every time, there is no reason to not add it to default.
    The code to run wpa_supplicant manually is:

    wpa_supplicant -Dwext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
    If you just wanted to test to see if it worked. You can replace -Dwext with -Dmadwifi if -Dwext doesn't work for you.

    /etc/init.d/dhcpcd start - runs.
    Maybe wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf instead of wpa_supplicant -Dwext -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf?
    When I run wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf nothing happens and I click Ctrl-C. Whether to perform /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 start? If so, I have a bug out:

    /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 start

    * Starting wpa_supplicant on wlan0 ... [ ok ]
    * Starting wpa_cli on wlan0 ...
    Failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open: No such file or directory

    Before that I have fulfilled ifconfig wlan0 up. What's the problem, help please?

    Ok, just forget about the gentoo networking for a bit. This works every time on mine.

    Make sure you have the correct kernel module.

    Kill the gentoo networking just to try this out:

    /etc/init.d/dhcpcd stop
    /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 stop
    Now, we run everything manually.
    In one vt, run wpa_supplicant, and you shouldn't have to specify the interface if you only have one wireless card.
    Code:
    wpa_supplicant -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
    It will not return you to a prompt. This is the way it is supposed to be to see why it is not connecting. Keep going.
    If that does not work, change -Dwext to -Dmadwifi.
    Now, if that works, switch to another vt (ctrl+alt+F1-6) and run this:

    dhcpcd wlan0
    After a few seconds, just
    Code:
    ifconfig
    to see if you get an ip address.

    It is split up into two parts. wpa_supplicant handles the router handshake and verification, and all dhcpcd does is get the ip address from the dhcp server (which is the router).

    That has worked on every distro I have tried, given that the config in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf is correct. If you can get this to work, then it is your config we have to work on. If you can't get this to work, then you have either chosen the wrong kernel module, don't have firmware loaded, or it just doesn't work correctly.

    One more thought, make sure your kernel is configured correctly. Here is a post with the config you have to have for your card, scroll about 2/3 of the way down:
