Looks like you need to install Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. (ALSA).

Can you post more lines before the error than you originally did?

You did compile ALSA into the kernel right?

Yeah you really SHOULD upgrade, as 2.6 has been out for sometime. I've heard bad things about genkernel, and I personally strongly reccomend against it as configuring the kernel is not really that difficult if you know what hardware you have. I've also heard that genkernel takes a very very very very long time to complete compared to doing it normally.
BTW, the latest 2.6 kernel is 2.6.10Emotions are the key to the soul.

I got the exact same error when building kde. I had a 2.4 kernel too. When I made a new 2.6 kernel, the problem was gone. Try 'genkernel --menuconfig', or look at the howto at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-upgrade.xml and don't forget to add alsa ^ ^.
Hope I could help.

After upgrading my Kernel to 2.6 and finally installing Xorg and KDE I now have a new problem. When I type startx I get this message close to the end I can see
