Just pretty much follow the instructions in there step-by-step, and you should be fine. All you really need to know is what hardware you're running and what packages you want.

Under normal circumstances no, but for me, and even my friend, we encountered serious problems during the install, which we were able to fix because of how much we do know about linux, but for a beginner, this wouldn't be possible. If you're having trouble, I would recommend trying a prebuilt distro, if you're looking for something fast, I've heard that debian is a very fast distro.

Painless (relatively) Install of Gentoo...
There is an automatic install for GENTOO:
the VLOL .iso single disk install you can download from the net.
It gets you right to the GUI (GNOME) without internet connections.

Gentoo Live CD.
I'd like to add something to this conversation by saying that I agree with the original author of this thread in that it is extremely difficult for non-linux users to understand the installation process when using the Gentoo Live CD. I'm attempting for the tenth time to install Gentoo on my computer but I'm afraid I'll screw everything up because I don't know what the answers are to some of the setup questions. I can't use any other form of Linux on my computer because they all freeze on me after I get to the firewall setup or three seconds after the login prompt appears.
