Why dont you try out Fluxbox or something like that? It's a LOT lighter than KDE.....
I'd not used anything EXCEPT KDE till i used gentoo, and i found that within a week or so i'd learnt what i needed to know bout flux. It's easy to configure aswell

I am using fluxbox hehe, I just want gnome and kde for apps such as k3b.
There's no escaping it, when I emerged firefox, when I got on flux, the dependincies were gtk, several lib's...really it's logical to just go ahead and put them on.Ma homeboy is Jesus himself.

You could do without, I uninstalled gnome and KDE to just run fluxbox, and when I installed apollon and beep-media-player, it fetched and compiled ONLY the needed libraries... Here is my current make.conf (USE="-xmms bmp" is because I prefer beep-media-player over xmms):

Update! I have now been unleashed from the boundries of linux and into the hands of BSD, running OpenBSD and loving it, it's got excellent hardware detection, it's fast, easy and secure. No other linux distro or fbsd has ever detected my Nvidia card out of the box apart from fc3. Theoretically, I could go a long way with it.
