basically followed the instructions on the gentoo alsa config site.. everything works up until actually trying to play a file.

You can unmute the channels in alsamixer or kmix or gnome-alsamixer etc.

I knew that you could use alsamixer, which always fails for me, i was hoping there was some step I hadn't tried... :/ oh well.

Probably stupid question, but have you tryed emerging alsa-utils and running "alsaconf" as root? (for it to work, alsa + soundcardsupport+ alsadrivers etc HAVE to be compiled as modules)

When compiling the kernel, I set it to be able to have pci soundcards but i didnt add alsa support actually within the kernel compile itself, I instead used alsa-driver as I thought the patch actually does an alsa install (in the kernel) for me...maybe i am mistaken.

amixer is what i am using to unmute each channel.

I am getting quite desperate to get this to work. I am a bit wierd and this kind of things like sit in the back of my head until they are resolved. So any help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to post some listings of configs etc...

have you tried genkernel, maybe you could get it working with that and then change to a custom compiled kernel to reduce the size...genkernel is extremely large. Note, you will still have to follow the alsa guide after compiling with genkernel
    Operating System: GNU Emacs
