will there be any packages i would want on the packagecd (if thats whats it is)

No, you can just emerge whatever package you need.
If you have the Universal cd, that is all you need. If you want to do a Stage3, that file is on the cd. There are a couple more files on the cd, but you will read about them as you do the install.
So what have you decided on, Stage1, 2, or 3?How to know if you are a geek.

im doing a stage 3 install right now as my first install of gentoo. been at it for about 6 hours now and im tired as hell and i have a massive headache. definately go for a stage 3 and save the stage 1 for the people who truely know what they are doing. well for an update on my TB hd. it currently has fedora and devian installed. im going to put vector linux on it and right now im in the process of putting gentoo on it. ive got a few BSDs lined up and im actually considering trying to figure out a way to put a mac mini inside my chasis(which is extravigantly huge) just to complete the bunch. i dont think its possible to install mac OS on a comp that doesnt have a mac motherboard is it? well if it is correct me.

Stage 1 can take a long time to install..

- 05-23-2005 #9The main reason IMO that people would do a Stage 3 instead of a Stage1 would be the compile time. But on a machine with 8 Gig of ram. That should not even be a concern.
