    yes, remember the stages are just the most basic system choices, only 80mb dl for the stage 3 tarball I think, are you can choose and tweak anything you want...its still a very customized system.

    Yeah, but how higly depends on which card you have... After setting up X with xorgconfig, remember to edit the config file if you want 3d-accel support (module glx, and perhapd other like dri too) or mousewheel-support.

    I beleve ATI give out their own drivers, but at my place that even slowed down 3D comared to using DRI... You could at least try DRI, then you see if it works. If 3D will work on other distros, take backup of the config file so you could see what options is enabled and enable them manually in gentoo.

    Myself I have a ATI Radeon 7000 running pretty smooth with DRI.

    What's DRI? I thought Gentoo could detect hardware automatically, is it easy to use
