when I try to load the APM module it says there is an error, also when I compile it into the kernel I cant start the APM in the init.d script it says that APM is not build into the kernel. Im running gentoo on a laptop and would really like to have a suspend mode. Is there another solution for this.

I'm pretty sure the 5150 doesn't use APM, but instead uses ACPI. Try loading the ACPI modules.
