Gentoo/MythTV + S/PDIF Out (Optical)
I'm thinking of building a HTPC to hook up to my Home Theater setup. I've pretty much settled on using either optical or coaxial to transfer audio between the PC and the A/V Receiver and I was wondering how much support was out there for optical and if there are any specific sound cards I should look at.
PS. I'm looking for full 5.1 surround sound support

if the card is supported by alsa (check the alsa card matrix) then the chances are that all connection types will also be supported.
