Thanks jabou. Sorry I took so long to reply, but I've been out of town for a while.
From /var/log/Xorg.0.log (I've only listed warnings and errors.
From /var/log/messages (again, I've tried to restrict the list to things that look wrong).Code:... (EE) Unable to locate/open config file ... I'm sorry if I've included too much info. I tried to limit it to things that didn't look quite right. Later I'm gonna try to emerge world again to see if that helps, but iIf it doesn't then I guess it's time to reinstallCode:... Oct 30 16:44:45 localhost Couldn't initialize miscdevice /dev/synth. ... At the moment I've got a working SuSE installation, but I really liked what I saw of gentoo and would like to get this fixed, so I really appreciate any help you can give me.Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880

after you did your first emerge -uD world, did you run etc-config and automatically let gentoo update all of your config files with the -3 option?
Operating System: GNU Emacs
- 10-31-2005 #14It's been a while now, but I don't think I did. What command do I use to do this??

sorry, not etc-config, but
but be carefull if you run this because it will want to overwrite certain config files that you may not want overwritten, so its best to go through them one by one rather than the option that lets you automatically update all of them...Code:etc-update
Operating System: GNU Emacs

etc-update with the -3 option will automatically take care of the trivial files and leave the rest for you to go through one by one.

Hi guys,
Sorry to drag up a thread from so long ago, but it was kinda left unfinished. After quite a bit of struggling with this and being unable to fix it, I decided to just go for a re-install
This is obviously not the perfect solution, but it at least persuaded me to ditch KDE and try fluxbox on the new installation, and it's always good to try new things.
The good news is that my most recent emerge world was successful!
Thanks for all the advice guys!Registered Linux user #388328 || Registered LFS user #15880
