There is a plugin for it. It comes with Gaim. Look in the preferences under Plugins.

    Plug-ins > System tray icon.

A little searching can do the trick sometimes .

What error(s) do you get? Have you tried re-starting gaim?

Shuts down when? When you try to open it? When you try to close it (put it in the tray)?

Have you tried running it from the command line to get error messages?

As Bryan said, run it from the CLI, perform all the actions you did before you got the error (so you can reproduce it), then look what Gaim says in the CLI. Surely there will be some pointers.
