a possible 'cure' is to install every gnome-python(and many python tools too) that you can find.

the desklet ebuilds dont work properly, once you have installed gdesklets-core you will have a gdesklets-config (i think thats the name - type gdesk and press tab twice in xterm) from that window you can drag/drop the URL to the desklet you want to install onto from your web browser onto the desklets window. It works very well, get the desklets from here:

    http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/categories.php

the links you should drag are the ones under the sub categories ending in the .tar.gz extension.

can i assume that you've installed all the gnome-python and all the necessary python requirements? at first, i had problems with gdesklets and found that the problem is almost certainly a python dependency problem.
to start up gdesklets, type in 'gdesklets start' to start the daemon. then to activate a particular gdesklet, type in 'gdesklets open <gdesklet name>' (it will be in the form 'name.display'. to start the gdesklets each time you log in, go to sessions in the gnome-control-centre, click on the 3rd tab, and add 'gdesklets start'. this will ensure that the daemon starts each time you log in. then the gdresklets will show up automatically when you log in.
