i have a dsl modem from bellsouth and I am tring to get the right
/etc/conf.d/net and the right /etc/resolv.conf so I can get on line.
can some one help ...

We will need a lot more info than that to help you. We need to know how it connects to the computer, and the chipset it uses. Then, how do you log in to the ISP or if the modem does it by itself.
Also, did the livecd work with it? If so, you can boot to the livecd and do a "lsmod" to see what modules are loaded for the modem and make sure you build those into your kernel (or build them as modules).

There is no need to login to the GUI as root!
