you have probably already tried recompiling the dirver by now.
Maybe try the ~ version.

would i be able to get the non-modular xorg-x11 and just block out the modular ones?

this should give you the latest monolithic and block anything newer.
Then unmerge, remerge xorg-x11 to get back to the monolithic version. It would probably be safer to just manualy unmerge and of the modular packages that block it than to use --depclean.

i dont know how,didnt do anything different, but i typed xorgcfg and a screen popped up, and i finally got it working again
