cannot login at agetty - pam problem?

I was emerging gnome, then after a reboot, I cannot login at the physical terminal (agetty). Someone suggested it is a pam related problem, but I have no idea how to solve it. I can still login using SSH, and GDM works as well, but just not ctrl-shift-F1 ~ F6.

After I typed in username, the computer wait for a few seconds, without prompting for password, and goes back to the username prompt again.

Has anyone seen such problems before? If so, any ideas on how to solve it? Thanks.
