check /etc/init.d to see if eth0 exists. then check that you have the appropriate configuration in your kernel.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

have you recently update your kernel? If you did a emerge --update --deep world and you have the "symlink" USE flag then the kernel will automatically update and place the appropriate symlink to /usr/src/linux and if you didn't use genkernel again or manually update your kernel then you might not have the appropriate nic selected.
check that you have these options enabled under device drivers --> network device support --> 10 or 100 mbit
