New to Linux, problems already
Hi, let me just start off by saying I'm just getting into the world of Linux, so please be understanding if I don't quite understand everything off the bat

On attempt number 4 of gentoo from the minimal cd (stage 3 install), I finally got it installed with internet access (previous installations ended up with not being able to boot or not having internet).
Problems have occured while trying to emerge links, emerge kde, or emerge gnome. A lot of the problem seems to involve x11(?)
The error that seems to happen a lot is as so (this one appears when trying to emerge links):
!!! ERROR: x11-libs/qt-3.3.6-r1 failed.
Call Stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1539: Called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh, line 939: Called src_compile
qt-3.3.6-r1.ebuild, line 200: Called die
!!! (no error message)
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
I'm running an Asus A7N8X-X with an AMD Athlon 2600+, using gentoo 2.6.16-r13, didn't use genkernel when reading through the handbook, tried setting up the kernel myself.
If any more information is needed, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for any help!

why would links be trying to install qt? that can't be the error message you get when you install links (QT/KDE aren't dependencies of links). are you sure you're not installing KDE? anyway, i don't think that's enough info. can you give the last few lines of output? this is where the real error message is.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I did a reboot, and now everything is working fine, everything I wanted installed happened without any problems, it was really weird, thanks for the help though.
