i hav put the live cd im this laptop and started the "gentoo linux installer (command line) and the pc is complaining that the hard drive is full. how do i erase everything off it?

you can use fdisk to format the harddrive, partition it, and of course erase everything. In the Gentoo handbook it describes how to use fdisk in detail.

i have tried that and it is still complaning that the drive is full

well first off I would use either the minimal install cd or universal install cd because the live cd was still buggy the last time I tried it. Second I guess post the output of
fdisk -l
and

Solved
Solved i downloaded the low level HDD formater for the laptop and ran that and finished installing gentoo last night.
