Why are some Kernel options disabled?
I am trying to compile my kernel and prepare it for wireless internet. However some of the options are not selectable. Specifically:
Networking --->
--- Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack
--- IEEE 802.11 WEP encryption
I'm using the "make menuconfig" to set up the kernel. Prior to this I entered "emerge wireless-tools ipw2100-firmware".
Can anyone give me a pointer as to how to make these options selectable? I'm hoping to select them like the following:
Networking --->
<M> Generic IEEE 802.11 Networking Stack
<M> IEEE 802.11 WEP encryption

Ok, to figure out why options are disabled you can press / and then type 802.

they are not disabled, they are submenus or sections

If you can't select something, that means that something else depends on that being built in the kernel, so it automatically selects it for you.

Just because you use a distribution, doesn't mean everyone uses the same one.
