I ran into something during installation I was hoping someone could shed some light on and at the same time could be useful to others trying to configure an installation.

My config...

Gentoo 2004.3 running as a virtual machine using VirtualPC 2007 on an XP laptop machine. I have a Broadcom Netxtreme 57xx interface, an Intel PRO/wireless 3945ABG interface, and a third loop back adapter for the VM to use as an always available interface to shared folders on the host XP machine.

None of the interfaces came up at boot time until the tulip driver was added to the kernel. I don't understand this. I thought the tulip driver was specifically for interfaces implemented with that particular chipset. I'm assuming the Intel and Broadcom interfaces do not actually use the Tulip hardware. Thoughts?
