Changing my mirrors
After weeks of having problems with installing Gentoo I took the easy way out and installed the Russian equivalent, Calculate.
What I want to do now in change my mirrors to closer to home.
The problem is my /etc/make.conf is entirely commented out (every line has an # before it). And there is no /etc/portage/make.config, so I don't know where the file directing my emerge is coming from.
Yet my computer performed a emerge --sync an hour ago.
Can I just uncomment the /etc/make.conf and change the mirrors?
Any help would be appreciated.
If the mirrors are valid and /etc/make.conf is still usable, yes, you might be able to uncomment them and see if that works. What I would do is move/merge /etc/make.conf to /etc/portage/make.conf and then try mirrorselect. I think it should be /etc/portage/make.conf but Calculate Linux might do it differently. I seem to remember that Gentoo changed this awhile back.

If Calculate uses portage style package management you should be able to install and select the 3 fastest mirrors and write them to make.conf with:
root #emerge -vDN mirrorselect && mirrorselect -s3 -b10 -o -D >> /etc/portage/make.conf
I'll give your suggestions a go.
