"DEPEND/*DEPEND problem"? update profile?
Rather than doing a stage 1 install, I did a minimal install from a universal CD with release 2004.1 with the intention of upgrading on-line. Following is the command I used and the response I got. I think the message means that either I need to change my "profile" (/etc/profile?, make.profile?) or maybe that my base install is now too obsolete to upgrade this way.
I'm trying to learn how this whole emerge and portage system works, so what's the best way to upgrade from what I have, or do I really need to start from the top again?
root # emerge --update --deep --fetchonly system

!!! possible candidates are:
- sys-devel/automake-1.5 (masked by: profile)
!!! (dependency required by "sys-devel/automake-wrapper-1-r1" [ebuild])
!!! Problem with ebuild sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.13-r1
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.
