Okay, I made the mistake of setting the "~x86" flag in make.conf. I'm pretty sure that's the root of all my problems...
I've since removed it, and updated many times...alot of things were downgraded, but I still have issues. I have constant segmentation faults and arbitrary program crashes, most of which aren't reproducable.
I've had mplayer, gkrellm, emerge, openoffice, azureus, among a slurry of other programs crash with a segmentation fault.
I'm using the nitro sources, but even without them, I have many of the same problems.
What can I do, short of starting from scratch? Can I just DL the stage3 compilation and go from there, and if so, how would I go about doing that?
