I'm running Gentoo 2.6.23-gentoo-r3.
I need to install my new monitor.
I have an Nvidia card using a beta driver because that's all that's available as far as I know. It's worked fine so far. No dvi capability.
I have it plugged in now and it's working but I want the higher res it offers. I'm at 1024 x 768.
I saw a thread on it here by googling it. But It looked to be locked.
So I hope I'm not creating redundancy.

You might try adding the desired resolution to your xorg.conf file if you haven't done so already. Just curious, what driver is it that you are using that only has a beta version available?
I'm looking for a line command that would tell me what it is. I couldn't find it in the Linux faq. I'm googling now.Quote:

When I try lspci, it says command not found, and using MC, it's not there.
The name was in xorg.conf.
You must have root privileges to execute lspci command. Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here.

Are above Refresh rates supported by your Monitor?Quote:

Check Monitor's Manual for supported Refresh rates and edit xorg.conf file accordingly.
These are Generic Refresh rates work fine with most of Monitors.

The 1600x1050 res is not saved in the file. I just did the search on it.
It was there from my attempt to edit, but permissions don't allow me to save it with the edits.
I don't know enough to go hacking about with the permissions. So once again: Help!
I'll find out about the refresh rates.
What's this I hear about ctrl alt backspace removing the file for an auto discovery?
ctrl+alt+backspace just restarts the X server
you need to edit those files as root so you can save them
