System Hangs exiting X

OpenGL apps run fine, like quake 3 for example -- but when they end, they hang. Quake 3, fglrxinfo, glxgears, everything.

Exiting X with CTRL+ALT+Backspace causes my system to hand. stopping X with "/etc/init.d/xdm stop" doesn't do anything, just sits there trying to stop kdm.

I've tried older version of my ATI drivers.

ATI Radeon 9800 pro
Xorg
ati-drivers and ati-drivers-extras installed

please advise.

I seem to have this one fixed, must have been an eBuild bug in the drivers or something.
