I'm no buff on writing games, but you might want to look into SDL programing, at www.libsdl.org.

you can utilize Blender (blender) to render games, but i dont know how good that is. Or theres "garagegames.com" if you want to pay about 150 dollars in licsences and progrrams. From what ive read its good but you need some programming background. If im not mistaken it uses "darkbasic"
Linux is for those who want to know why their computer works.

I think you can make 8-bit like games in c++, but I'm not 100% sure.
Don't most companies that make big games today either heavly modify a language, or make their own?

I wouldn't think so, after all, you've got to start somewhere. If we gave up on something because we thought it was "no easy task", many of us would not even be using linux in the first place. I think starting out with programming by doing something that interests you will get you the farthest.

I am also starting to make games, first on the agenda is learning to program, then learn more, then when I am good, I will make flawless code and rockin' games :P.
What aspect of game development are you looking into:
3d modeling
Coding
Sound
Design?
