Iomega Desktop usb 500gb external hard drive. Losing sync?

Hello, this is my first post here.

I have a wee bit of a problem with my new external hard drive. I'm running ubuntu 7.04 feisty and the drive is an iomega usb desktop 500gb external hard drive. When I boot from my internal hard drive the drive is recognized. Then, after a certain period of time the drive acts as if has been physically unplugged from the usb port without unmounting. At this point if i unplug and plug in the usb cable nothing happens. But, if I power down then power on it is detected for a short period of time before the same error. So, after this I checked lsusb and the drive was not on the list. As I checked this the drive spun up. So I checked again. It was now on the lsusb list. So, I checked fdisk -l, nothing. I think it may be caused by some sort of powersave on the hard drive. But, indeed I may be wrong. I have tried all the usb ports front and back on the machine, same thing. I haven't made any entries into the fstab as I'm still quite new to this and I'm still unfamiliar with fstab entries. I'm also unfamiliar with the mount points in ubuntu , they aren't under /mnt. I've only been using this distro for about a week. So I've had a bit of trouble mounting it in terminal. If any one has any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

I went out and got a new cable thinking maybe the one shipped with it was faulty. No luck.I found the mount points under /media. I mounted the device. But after a few it revved down and lost connection.
    Thank you for your help....
