Want to try 3D desktops

hi guys,
I have read about beryl and some others, Wish to give these a try.
But the problem is I donot know what kind of 3D card they are talking about...
could someone simplify that for me - is it a card with graphics acceleration and some on board RAM . Can someone suggest some cheap alternatives.
Actually I saw once, these high end graphics cards which needed these special glasses .... do we need that kind of hardware for this stuff?

It should definitely be a graphics card with 3D acceleration. In my desktop system I have nvidia fx5200, 128 ram - this is a really old card - and beryl doesn't run really smooth.
