    How does GRUB view memory cards, such as SD and CF?


    I don't like thread-jacking, so I decided to create this thread.

    What is the computer science between these memory/camera cards?

    I keep reading they use blocks of data.
    What is that suppose to mean?

    To me, that means it uses a table of data? What?
    Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. I can't find much info about this.

    Also, because the topic keeps reoccuring...

    How does GRUB react to them?
    How does one setup GRUB to use them?
    How does a person boot to these types of flash memory?
    Do they even have a MBR?

    Casper had said something that made me wonder. In fact, I don't really know the computer science between these things, yet I know there are varieties, which leads me to think there is a difference. Yet knowing there some wires on PCB can help transform them into one another. And I've viewed these converters. They look like simple hacks.

    Hi Agent-X !

    All storage media, SD, CF, Camera cards, CD/DVD, HDs contain MBR.

    MBR is a first sector of storage media and it contains Boot Code, Partition Table, Boot Loader ( if any ) and Media Signature (type).


    Linux Kernel 2.6 and later use Windows NT based partitioning scheme. Windows based boot loaders need Active/Bootable Partition to boot any OS and its not easy to set partitions of CF/SD and other memory devices active/bootable.
    It means its not easy to install Windows OSes in those Media.

    GRUB is much advanced and powerful boot loader than Windows Boot Loader. GRUB doesn't need active partition to boot OS. It handles partitions/boot records very efficiently. You can boot any OS installed in any media using GRUB.


    How does GRUB react to them?
    If you configure GRUB properly, it will boot up OS.

    How does one setup GRUB to use them?
    It depends on type of Media and OS.
    How does a person boot to these types of flash memory?
    Install GRUB in those Media, if possible Or use Smart Boot Manager CD/FLoppy, SuperGRUB CD or loadlin to boot OS. Again, all depends on Hardware and software compatibility.
    Do they even have a MBR?
    Yes.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    I don't understand how a person can call it a sector, though. With circular or concentric media, I could see that. It has to do with geometry and algebra in that case. But with these flash media, they are like a square, right? Are saying the squares have sectors?
