    For what it's worth, I just installed 8.04 on my Toshiba Portege 3500. The video problem I had was that when I'd log in to X, I had a small desktop surrounded by about an inch of black, and no choice but 800x600. I tried various things to fix this.

    When I found your thread here, I used the exact edits you have shown to my xorg.conf file and got excellent results. Upon logging back in, I still had the tiny desktop, but when I used System > Preferences > Screen Resolution to set the res to 1024x768 (which I think is native for the monitor) the display "popped" out to full size and looks beautiful.
