yes, you can change it in your /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.

see there in section mouse to configure it..you can do in graphic mode if you're using a distro like suse (with yast2)

Since you're running Slack, use mouseconfig to change your mouse type. Then, you can either run xorgconfig or manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to set up the mouse for X.
