You probably don't have APM or ACPI configured into the kernel.
What's the output of the following commands (as root)?
JeremyCode:apm acpi

I had this probelm with Mandrake 9.2 you will have to recompile the kernel with ACPI.
What kind of laptop do you have?
Try this website http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ it lists all laptops that people have attempted at loading Linux on and there solutions to problems they came across.
