What distro are you running? You might need to install hplip if it isn't already. Once installed, you will (or should) have hp-toolbox installed... a "GUI" utility for configuring HP devices... provided they are supported. It also may be supported by sane, also installable. Need to know that distro...

Good news and bad news.
Good news is you don't need the CD's or manual because they don't work with Linux. Also good news, HP scanners are very well supported natively in Linux. If you run an up to date distro you're chances are good that everything you need is already installed.
Bad news. I can't say whether it'll work in one go. It might. It might not.
Turn on and plug in the scanner and run these:
You might run into permission problems. su or sudo to root then.Code:dmesg|tail # To see whether the kernel recognizes the new device /sbin/lsusb # To see whether the kernel recognizes the new device # And the commands to fire up the scanner: sane-find-scanner scanimage -L xsane
If xsane didn't find your device in that last command, then post the output of the above commands here. Can't tell an OS by it's GUI
