You replace 'fstype' with either vfat or ntfs, depending on whether the file system on the USB drive is FAT32/16 or NTFS, respectively.

ok figured it out....I also reformatted the drive into reiserfs. now I am able to mount the drive with mount /dev/sdb1. But when I drag files onto the drive from my desktop via konqueror and it says:

    Access denied to /mnt/Balil
(balil is the name of an album).

do I need to chmod the drive?

Yes. If the drive is reiserfs, you need to chmod so you can write to it.
