    Bootable USB Hardrive Formatting Help

I have a 500GB External USB Hard drive that i used to boot Fedora 8 onto my laptop running windows. Recently, i installed Ubuntu onto the same laptop so have no use for Fedora 8 however i wish to make the 500GB USB Hard Drive a backup for my families windows computers and my linux computer. When i plug in the Hard drive it recognizes it but is unable to mount it. Im pretty sure this is because it was made to be bootable.

How can i fix this and format the drive to be recognizable by windows and linux? FAT32?

    Thank you...

It doesn't matter if Disk is bootable or not. Both OSes should mount its partitions without any problem.

Plug in disk, boot up Fedora and execute this
    Code:
    su -
    /sbin/fdisk -l
    Post the output here.

I open my BIOS, select USB Hard Drive and it begins to open grub but it boots into Ubuntu. When i enter the Grub menu i get various versions of ubuntu eg. recovery mode, older kernel version etc but no Fedora.

How else can i get fix my problem?

Ubuntu recognises the drive however it says "Unable to mount location - Unable to mount file".

When i load the drive in gparted (i can only do it in the terminal) it states it is unnalocated but when i try to create a new partition it goes "error creating new partition table".

Ive tried mkdosfs and mkfs and fdisk, none of them will successfully format the drive.

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb said it formatted the drive, with some errors "Unable to read/write ease/read sector 0" but i can still cannot mount the drive.

    There are many options. ...
    darik's boot and nuke
    partition magic
    to name a few.

What's your concern about UBCD? It's free, it works.

That should do it, you might also find a formatting tool on the same CD, I'd create the new partition as FAT32 for using it with both Windows and Linux.
I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.
