Regarding good motherboards, some that I've owned were Abit, ASUS, and Gigabyte.oz

That is quite a motherboard, Rokytnji, but it is much more than what I need or could be comfortable with.

My suse 10 os is not supported ant more and I only use my windows xp os to use the easy office software I bought to compose my letters. I checked and I can fit Ubuntu into my computer so that is what I'll do eventually. Thank You Very Much gentlemen for your input.
I'll have to put my suse files on a flash drive and use my old windows 97 computer to print out my letters. I'll also have to find out how Ubuntu accesses the Internet.Linux registered user # 414321

My upgrade suggestions would be memory and a hard drive.
I just upgraded my system ... bought 2GB RAM because thats the max the motherboard is supposed to cope with (but it does not
... it recognises both 1GB sticks on their own or with the 512MB the system came with - MESH PC in my case with ASUS A7A266-E motherboard). Sometimes the manual does not tell the whole story.
Supplemented the existing 80GB hard drive with a new one ... OK but XP did not recognise the 320GB hard drive until I put service pack 3 on it
. Windows kept trying to reformat it
Linux worked without any problems
updated fstab with uuid references so now I can boot either the original hard drive install (Windows XP + Linux) or the new hard drive (Linux only).
You should be able to get the external modem to work with Linux ... but since your on dial-up you are probably better off looking for a DVD you can install everything from.
Motherboard upgrade is a step too far for me ... likely to replace the machine instead ... I'd feel a bit different if I built the machine myself but I didn't ...
Good luck with the upgrade and let us know how it goes ...
