Gateway Solo 9500 laptop bootup fix
A little late, but in case anybody is still interested, the following parameter seems to fix the bootup problem for me...
pci=conf2
This is when booting a live CD of Puppy Linux 430 Small, on a Gateway Solo 9500 with 128 MB of RAM.
(Likewise, pci=off will fix the bootup crash, but then the PCI devices don't work.)

Thanks
As luck would have it, I'm playing with my old laptop and setting it up with Linux. Had the same problem, though 1 in 2 would work if I went the failsafe bootup. As a side note, if you have the screen issue where part of the screen is doubled and folded over, cycling through the fn 'lcd/crt' clears it up for that session. Makes it simpler to try other fixes.
