    Question Sound connections acting weird

    i'm using a dell studio 1537 and linuxmint 6
not sure what sound card i have. i lshw commanded it but i couldn't find.

the jacks are two haedphone and one microphone. the microphone i don't have so don't know if it works
one jack works but the speakers still pump out sound when the headphones are in.
when you plug in the other socket there's no sound out of anything.

I expect the out of the two headphone sockets, one is line in. The working headphone socket is probably driven by the Intel HDA.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

If you go into the bios you shold be able to turn on the jack detection, that is the speakers silence (mute) when you plug in headphones.

I expect the other audio device - AMD based in the 3450? provides the sound via the hdmi output.
In a world without walls and fences, who needs Windows and Gates?

    hmmm... not so.
there is no entry into the bios for jack detection.

    play with alsa settings

    Hi,

I've got a similar laptop, and similar "symptoms". I'm using Ubuntu intrepid, which uses alsa 1.0.17.
The "trick" in getting audio in both headphone outputs is turning on the headphone in the volume settings. (using gnome-volume-control, check every box in "preferences" for the "HDA Intel (alsa mixer)", then you should have a slider for Master, Front, Headphone, PCM en Surround. You may also need to play with the switches and options.
