    Samsung Wireless printer

I have a Samsung CLP-315W. I'm using Fedora 11. I downloaded the unified Linux driver for this printer from the Samsung site. I ran the installation package, and as far as the computer/OS can tell this printer seems to be "installed." That is, it's an option from anywhere I try to print. OpenOffice Writer does give me a print error, but every other application I've tried returns no error when I attempt to print to this printer.

But of course, nothing is coming out of the printer. It's a wireless "network" printer, which is to say that it's not connected to anything at all. It simply has an IP on my wireless network.

Printing has always been a problem for me in Linux. Any ideas how to resolve?

    Thanks,
    -abs

EDIT: Ok, as a followup, I did manage to locate the CUPS page via web browser. My printer is listed, and the status is:

Idle - "Filter "/usr/lib64/cups/filter/rastertosamsungsplc" for printer "CLP-300splc" not available: Permission denied

    Any clue?

Absolutely. You have no permissions for using the net printer and possibly some other network resource. Are you working as a root on the system and sole user of it? Either log in as root and change the settings for your username permisssions to include printing to that printer or have root of your network do that for you...

Can you clue me in as to what command I might use to change permissions for using a device? I have a reference book for the fine details, but don't really know where to start.

Thanks for the help, BTW. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back; I've been out of town for a week on business. -abs

Well, if anyone has any ideas, I'm still in need of help with this.

I tried logging in as root in a terminal window and sending a file to print with:

    lpr filename.txt

But the printer still produced nothing.

Check the CUPS error log, from the CUPS web interface.

Error log seems to be completely blank.

When I go to the Administration tab in CUPS and click "Manage printers," the printer is listed. If I select the printer, there is then a drop-down box labeled "administration." Anything I try to select in that drop-down (including "set allowed users") yields "Forbidden."

    I'm really lost.

It appears that I did not mention above that this printer is WIRELESS (it doesn't *have* to be wireless -- it does have a USB connector -- but I use it wirelessly). I can't believe I didn't mention that above. All the machines in my house (the rest are all MS Windows-based) print to this unit via the wireless router.

Did CUPS ask you for a password at anytime? You might need to use the root password if it does ask for it.
Does Fedora still use system-config? Try running that as root and see what happens.
    system-config-printer
I'm not familiar with Wireless printers at all, but it can't be too much different, are you sure you have all the correct settings in the CUPS interface? Do you see Administration>Edit Configuration file>Use default configuration?
This will write a new config file, which worked for me in a fit of rage when I couldn't get my USB printer to work. Give it a shot, but make a copy of the current file first.
Make sure you are in the system lp group too.

Well, I did click on "Use default configuration," but I didn't see any confirmation that that actually made any change.

System-config-printer merely brings up the GUI for the printer configurator, which I've been playing with anyway. I tried to send another text file to print, and this is the message I see in CUPS:

▼ ID ▼ Name User Size Pages State Control
    CLP-300splc-4 new file.txt abs 29k Unknown stopped
    "/usr/lib64/cups/filter/rastertosamsungsplc failed"

I don't really know what to make of it.

Have you read the Install notes in the driver package? You must have CUPS, SANE and Ghostscript installed first, then Install the Unified driver from Samsung, here is the howto. If nothing else, try reinstalling the driver and tell us the exact command/ methods that you use.

    Samsung Unified Linux Driver installer
    Welcome
You are about to install Unified Linux Driver package.
Samsung Unified Linux Driver package is the accompanying software for Samsung printers and multifunction peripherals (MFP). The package supports printing with all devices and scanning with MFP on Linux platform.
The primary goal of the package design is maximum convenience and ease of use. The package contains not only printer and scanner drivers themselves, that is, low level software providing a principal ability to print documents and to scan images. The package also delivers powerful applications for configuring your devices and further processing of scanned documents.
    Dependencies
Unified Linux Driver package depends on printer and scanner services provided by Common Unix Printing System (CUPS - CUPS) and Scanner Access Now Easy (SANE - SANE - Scanner Access Now Easy) system packages. These components are mutually necessary for the drivers to work properly. In addition, Ghostscript application (Ghostscript: Ghostscript) is required for correct functioning of the printer drivers.
Installer tries to detect if the components are installed and have proper versions. In case necessary component is not installed, it is recommended to interrupt the installation by clicking Cancel button and to install the component from the Linux distribution disk, Web site of the Linux vendor or Web site of the vendor of missing environment component (see references above).
There is possibility to ignore absence of an environment component. In such a case press Skip All button to proceed to further installation stage. If environment components are skipped, please, do not forget to install them before usage of the Unified Linux Driver.
In any case CUPS must be installed before Unified Linux Driver, or printing will not be available. If you did installation without CUPS and would like to install CUPS later, you should uninstall Unified Linux Driver, install CUPS and then install Unified Linux Driver again.
Note. If printer or MFP device is connected to parallel port, the device should be switched on before Linux boot to be identified by Installer.
    Samsung Unified Linux Driver installation
Samsung Unified Linux Driver package is being installed automatically displaying progress indicators for overall installation and for particular parts of the package.
At the time of installation only Help button is available.
In case of any error a message box is displayed to show the problem's origin. Possible problems can arise in case of absence of necessary environment components. In this case, please, exit the installation, set up the necessary environment packages and run installation of Samsung Unified Linux Driver package again.
    Success
Congratulations! Samsung Unified Linux Driver package is installed successfully.
Enjoy using reliable Samsung Hi-Tech device!
Click Configurator icon on your desktop to start.

Yes, it appears that CUPS, SANE, and ghostscript are all installed. I reinstalled the driver using the autorun command (as root) in the downloaded folder, i.e.
    # ./cdroot/autorun

This opens an installation GUI. I did select my username as one to add to the group with print privileges. I selected the option that I would *not* be using USB devices. I also selected to disable LPT support (which was recommended if I wasn't going to use it).

I tried to print a page and got the usual message about "rastertosamsungsplc" failing. This time, however, a "help" dialogue popped up offering to give me a hand. I went all through several screens answering questions until I finally arrived at the end, where I was asked to print a test page. The test page returned the usual error. However, along the line I elected to enable a debugging log. Here is the output of that log: (Sorry that this is immensely long)
