Solved pppd: permissions denied
With the following settings for pppd -rwsr-sr-x 1 root root
When I try to start chestnut modem dialer as regular user I get:
pppd: can't open options file /etc/ppp/peers/Chestnut-dialer
Also when I am in console as regular user and I cd /usr/sbin and ls -l I get the above but with the ending word PPPD in RED, where as in root, it is not, and I can dial out in root ok. I have Lenny and XFCE desktop running. frank
I thought with SUID setting regular user would not get permissions denied.
I solved problem. I sudo thunar, (file system for desktop XFCE), I click on etc, than ppp, I opened ppp, opened pap-secrets. There I uncommented line that said:
Every regular user may use ppp and has to use passwords from /etc/passwd
I assume I am the only regular user and I assume choosing this option does not compromise security. If I am incorrect on any of these assumptions someone please correct me. Bottom line, I can dial out as regular user now. I guess it pays to open up all the files pertaining to folder in question. FrankLast edited by frank56; 09-12-2009 at 10:51 PM. Reason: new info

This is just a guess, since I do not use a dialer nor pppd. It seems to me the error is saying that it can't find/read /etc/ppp/peers/Chestnut-dialer
Is there supposed to be an options files here that you need to set up?pppd: can't open options file /etc/ppp/peers/Chestnut-dialer
EDIT: here is a howto from the Ubuntu Forums, for Chestnut-dialer
